Frequently asked questions

Honest answers for pet professionals who want to know what this work is really about

Starting any kind of coaching or support can bring up questions. That is normal.

For some people, the question is practical.
How does it work?
What happens in a session?
Is it online?

For others, the question sits a bit deeper.
Is this really for me?
Will this actually help?
Do I need to have everything figured out before I start?

This page is here to answer some of the most common questions people may have before working with me through Shine A Light.

Because if you are considering this work, I do not want you trying to decode vague coaching language like it is some kind of emotional escape room.

What is Shine A Light?

Shine A Light is transformational coaching for pet professionals across all sectors. It is designed to support the person behind the profession — the one carrying the pressure, the responsibility, the overthinking, the emotional load or the sense that something needs to change.

This work helps pet professionals create change from the inside out, using transformational coaching and NLP-based tools to support things like confidence, self-trust, boundaries, pricing wobbles, stress patterns, identity shifts and deeper personal growth.

Who do you work with?

I work with pet professionals across a wide range of sectors, including dog groomers, trainers, walkers, sitters, pet business owners, veterinary support professionals, educators, retail teams and other people working within the pet industry.

Although the roles may look different from the outside, many of the deeper patterns are often the same. Pressure, people-pleasing, emotional overload, fear of judgement, over-responsibility and self-doubt do not tend to care what job title someone has.

Is this just for dog groomers?

No. While I have a strong background in the dog grooming world and understand that industry deeply, Shine A Light is for pet professionals across all sectors.

The heart of this work is not just the role itself. It is the experience of the person inside the role.

What is NLP?

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

In simple terms, it is a way of understanding how people think, respond, communicate and create patterns in their lives. NLP-based tools can be used to help people shift unhelpful thinking, emotional responses and behaviour patterns in a practical and powerful way.

You do not need to know anything about NLP before working with me. You definitely do not need to turn up sounding like a textbook. I guide the process in a way that feels clear and accessible.

Is this therapy?

No. My work is coaching, not therapy.

That means the focus is on helping you understand your patterns, create meaningful change and move forward in a way that feels stronger, clearer and more aligned. Coaching can still go deep, but it is not a substitute for therapy or mental health treatment where that is needed.

If I ever feel that another kind of support would be more appropriate, I would always be honest about that.

What can I get help with?

People come to this work for many different reasons.

Some want help with confidence, boundaries or self-trust.
Some are struggling with burnout, overwhelm or emotional pressure.
Some are dealing with pricing or policy wobbles.
Some feel stuck in old patterns and know something deeper needs to shift.
Some are at a point where they want more from their work or life, but do not yet fully trust themselves to step into it.

You do not need to have the perfect words for what is going on. Sometimes part of the work is helping you make sense of that in the first place.

What happens in a 1:1 session?

Every session is shaped around you and what is most relevant at that time.

That may include exploring current challenges, identifying patterns, working with beliefs, emotional responses, internal standards, self-talk, nervous system state, identity shifts or practical next steps. Sessions are supportive, honest and focused on creating real movement rather than just talking in circles.

My role is not to sit there nodding beautifully while you stay stuck in the same place. My role is to help you see what is really happening and support you to change it.

Do I need to be in crisis to work with you?

Not at all.

You do not need to be falling apart to benefit from this work. In fact, many people come to coaching because they are functioning perfectly well on the outside and know that does not tell the full story.

Sometimes the issue is not crisis.
It is misalignment.
Exhaustion.
Frustration.
A repeating pattern.
A quieter knowing that something has to change.

That is enough.

Is this practical or more emotional?

Both.

This work goes deeper than surface-level advice, but it is also grounded and practical. I care about real life. I care about what changes when you go back into your business, your work, your conversations and your decisions.

So yes, we may look at emotions, patterns and identity-level shifts. But the goal is always to create change that actually lands in how you live and lead yourself.

Do you offer online sessions?

Yes. Coaching sessions and many workshops can be offered online, making them accessible wherever you are.

If there are in-person opportunities, workshops or events, those will be shared separately.

Do you offer group sessions?

Yes. I offer group coaching and workshops for pet professionals, as well as talks and sessions for teams, memberships, colleges and industry events.

These sessions are ideal for shared themes such as confidence, boundaries, pricing, burnout, identity shifts and self-leadership.

How do I know if this is right for me?

This work is likely a good fit if you are ready to be honest about what is not working and open to creating change differently.

You do not need to have everything figured out.
You do not need to arrive as the “perfect client.”
You do not need to already feel confident.

You just need a willingness to look at what is happening and a sense that you are ready for something to shift.

If that is there, even quietly, that is often enough to begin.

How do I get started?

The easiest way to start is to book a call or get in touch.

That gives us space to look at what support might fit best and whether working together feels right.

Because sometimes the first step is not having the whole answer.

Sometimes it is simply deciding not to keep doing it all in the same way.
